All About Maryland

Even though Maryland was established by George Calvert as a safe haven for Catholics, the English Parliament greatly discouraged Catholicism in the Colonies, as Parliament wished to promote the Anglican church. Due to newcomers of other faiths, Catholicism has not been Maryland's major religion since 1600s; although it still remains a prominent contender. However even with its mainly Protestant population, Maryland still preserves much of its old Catholic traditions.

Baltimore was home to Archbishop John Carrol; the Catholic church's outpost in America. Emmitsburg was home of the first Saint to be born in America, Georgetown University, the first Catholic university in the states was founded in 1780 in Maryland, and Baltimore's National Shrine of the Assumption of Virgin Mary was the first Roman Catholic cathedral constructed in the United States.

Despite hindrances and outside influences, to this day, Maryland preserves and remembers its Catholic roots, and there are still many who remain true to the faith.
